Baobab Garden: A Multicultural Oasis

A Unique Blend of Asian and African Inspiration

Baobab Garden is a stunning creation by designer Amaury Gallon that combines elements of Asian and African culture to form a truly unique and captivating outdoor space. Inspired by the baobab tree, this garden invites visitors to immerse themselves in a multicultural oasis.

Baobab Garden is a testament to the designer's fascination with trees and their significance in different cultures. The baobab tree, known as the "Spirit of the forest" and the "magic tree," holds great meaning for many African communities. It is revered for its utilitarian and ideological value, serving as a source of medicine, food, and even water storage. Gallon wanted to create a tree that would embody this symbolism and become the centerpiece of a multicultural garden.

What sets Baobab Garden apart is its seamless integration of Asian and African influences. The garden features elements of Japanese design, such as Acer plants, granite lanterns, and a wooden path. These elements harmoniously coexist with the baobab tree, creating a fusion of cultures that is both visually striking and thought-provoking.

The baobab tree itself is a marvel of craftsmanship. Standing at 3 meters tall, it is entirely self-supporting and constructed from sections of bamboo. Over 4,400 bamboo sections were meticulously assembled to create the tree, with three branches adorned with additional bamboo sections. The result is a visually stunning representation of a baobab tree that captures its essence and symbolism.

Visitors to Baobab Garden can experience a range of emotions and interactions. The garden can be a place of contemplation, relaxation, or simply a serene setting for a leisurely stroll. The baobab tree serves multiple functions, acting as a support for plants, a lamp, a bottle holder, or even a messenger. Its versatility knows no bounds, allowing visitors to engage with it in various ways.

The project took three months to complete, from February to April 2013, and was initially showcased at the Jardins Jardin show in Paris. It now resides permanently at the Jardins de Babylone Showroom, where it continues to captivate visitors with its unique blend of cultures and its powerful message about the importance of preserving our natural world.

Baobab Garden was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2014, recognizing its exceptional creativity, technical prowess, and innovative design. This accolade highlights the remarkable level of excellence and the positive emotions evoked by this extraordinary creation.

Baobab Garden is not just a garden; it is a testament to the power of design to bridge cultures, inspire contemplation, and remind us of the wisdom that lies within nature.
